Northwest Texas – more commonly known as the Texas Panhandle or the state’s Panhandle Plains – is not without its more densely-populated urban and suburban areas (such as in Downtown Amarillo, for example). However, this region of Texas as a whole is still largely rural, with a prevalence of small towns and agricultural communities.

Farming and cattle ranching are big business, and western cowboy culture is a huge part of the Panhandle’s identity. Even Amarillo, while being the most populous city in the region at more than 500,000 residents, is sometimes considered a “big small town.” The region is filled with wide-open pastures and grassland, deep red canyons with towering rocky cliffs, and rolling rivers and deep lakes.

Living in or visiting Northwest Texas, you’ll hear about the rich history of ranching, industry pioneers and landmark ranches such as the LX Ranch, XIT Ranch and how they helped define Texas as it is today. There are some amazing restaurants (Can you eat a 72-ounce steak with sides in an hour?), multiple museums, and wonderful areas for outdoor recreation (Palo Duro Canyon and Lake Meredith are two of the many standouts.) For higher-education, the Panhandle offers a number of colleges and universities, as well as vocational/technical schools.

Following are the counties, cities and towns that represent the core market area in Texas we serve at United Country Real Estate | Caprock Properties & Auction. Our overview includes a variety of destinations and popular tourism spots for outdoor adventures, history, dining, art and culture, family fun and more.
